A pleasant, refreshing essential oil is made from the majestic, evergreen balsam fir. This North American tree can reach 24 meters in height and has thin needles. Native Americans used balsam fir for rituals and rejuvenation. Balsam fir, mainly used for pulp production and as a building material, does not respond well to pollution and is therefore not commonly found in large cities. It grows much more often in forests where the air is fresh and clean. When applied topically during massage, the main component of balsam fir oil, ß-Pinene, may have a soothing effect on the skin. The essential oil is obtained from the bark of the balsam fir through steam distillation and has a fresh, forest aroma.
